Site Coordinator | 2024 – 2025

Note There are multiple open Site Coordinator positions at the various schools where we operate.

Homework Central is a community-based, educational nonprofit that provides after-school tutoring for students and support to their families. Four days a week, our volunteers and staff support students with homework completion through small group work and enrichment activities. For over two decades, the organization has helped San Mateo elementary children become successful students in school. Our goal is to create a community of lifelong learners.

Position Overview

The site coordinator provides leadership and facilitation of a school-site after-school program. Under the program director’s guidance, the site coordinator develops a balance of academic and enrichment activities that help students develop and strengthen academic, physical, and social skills. In addition to supervising day-to-day site operations, the site coordinator also provides academic tutoring and enrichment programming for a classroom of up to twenty students. This position will also guide and support two site assistants and up to 10 daily volunteer tutors.

Employment Type and Compensation

Part-time, Non-Exempt
15 – 20 hours a week
$22–25 per hour based on skills and experience

Time Commitment

  • August 14, 2024 – June 11, 2025 (per the San Mateo-Foster City School District school calendar)
  • Hours are M, Tu, Th, Fr 2:30 – 6:15 pm
  • Wednesday 12:30 – 6:15 pm
  • There will be up to 3 hours of administrative work each week including meetings, and depending on skills and experience, some positions will have more responsibilities and increased hours. We also have 4 evening events over the course of the school year that require attendance.

Programming

  • Provide tutoring and homework completion support to the students in class
  • Foster positive relationships with school administrators, teachers, and parents
  • Communicate with teachers and parents on a regular basis regarding the students’ progress in the program
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and ensure sign-out procedures are followed by all staff
  • Ensure classroom in maintained clean and organized on a daily basis
  • Maintain inventory of snacks, classroom supplies, and play equipment
  • Maintain quarterly budget and track classroom expenditures accurately
  • Ensure tutoring progress is captured for all students via session summary forms that are to be completed by tutors daily
  • Provide a safe and supportive environment for students, staff, and volunteers
  • Support students and tutors with day-to-day homework tutoring
  • Organize and distribute snacks for students daily
  • Assist and participate in HWC evening family events
  • Guide and support after-school staff and volunteers to ensure program success
  • Oversee day-to-day volunteer engagement and management

School and Family Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships
  • Keep up-to-date about student achievements and concerns

Administrative

  • Attend weekly staff meetings and professional development workshops
  • Document daily student attendance and the day’s events in the site log
  • Complete end-of-year assessment report

Qualifications

  • Preferred 2-year degree with an emphasis in education or equivalent experience
  • Preferred classroom management skills
  • Ability to manage groups of students and individuals
  • Interact positively with students and adults
  • Experience working with elementary-age children
  • Works well independently and collaboratively
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills
  • Spanish lor Portuguese language skills preferred
  • TB and Department of Justice fingerprint clearance
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States

Site Assistant | 2024 – 2025

Employment Type and Compensation Part-time, Non-Exempt, $17.35 – $18.50 per hour based on skills, experience and number of days a person can work in a week.

Time Commitment

  • 2024 – 2025 school calendar year beginning Aug. 14 through June 11.
  • Program hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 3:00 – 6:00 pm; Wednesday 1:00 – 6:00 pm.
  • Site Assistants are required to commit to a minimum of three days a week and should arrive no later than 3:30 pm on M, Tu, Th, and Friday and no later than 1:30 pm on Wednesday.
  • Hours vary by site. Depending on the number of days worked per week, a site assistant will be expected to work an average of 6 – 8 hours per week at Baywood Elementary and 10 – 15 hours a week at Laurel, Sunnybrae and Park Elementary.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide homework and literacy (reading, writing, comprehension) assistance for 2nd – 5th graders daily
  • Provide effective supervision of students in and out of the classroom at all times
  • Complete brief online tutoring survey for students receiving homework support from site assistant/tutor on a daily basis
  • Maintain classroom clean and organized at the end of each day
  • Assist with snack time: prepare, serve, and clean up after student snack time
  • Assist students with the use of Chromebooks and other technology used by students onsite
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and professional development sessions

Qualifications

  • Able to commit to a minimum of four days a week for the duration of the 2024 – 2025 school year.
  • Must be enrolled in high school if under 19 years of age
  • University and Community College students encouraged to apply
  • Spanish or Portuguese language skills preferred
  • Reliable with a positive attitude
  • Communicate clearly with children and adults
  • Act responsibly and respectfully
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States

Literacy Center Site Assistant | Position filled for 2024

Time Commitment

September 5, 2023 – May 30, 2024
Program hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 3:00–6:00 pm, and Wednesday from 1:00–4:00 pm. You must arrive no later than 3:30 pm (M, Tu, Th) and 1:30 pm (Wed).

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance in Literacy skill development through worksheets, spelling, reading and writing; and some homework assistance for 2nd–5th graders
  • Assist with snacks: prepare, serve, and clean up after student snack time
  • Support the Site Coordinator in assigned tasks
  • Support students through small group literacy activities

Literacy Site Coordinator | Position filled for 2024

Position Overview

Under the program director's guidance, the literacy site coordinator (LSC) is responsible for the literacy center’s supervision and coordination, including overseeing the coordination of resources and material and implementing the curriculum. The LSC will work closely with the program director to adapt the curriculum to maximize student interests, skills, and needs.

Employment Type and Compensation

Part-time, Non-Exempt
$25 per hour
16-20 hours a week

Benefits include two weeks earned vacation (32 – 40 hours, based on hours worked per week), sick leave, and retirement savings through CalSavers. Additionally, a cash benefit can be applied towards healthcare costs or retirement savings.

Time Commitment

Currently hiring. October 2022 – June 2, 2023; Hours are M, Tu, Th 2:30–5:30 pm; and W 12:30–3:30 pm during the 2022/2023 San Mateo-Foster City School District school calendar. Per school request, one hour might be added to each day of service (decision to be made in early September) There will be up to 3 hours of administrative work each week including meetings, and depending on skills and experience, some positions will have more responsibilities and increased hours. Weekly staff meetings will be scheduled a month in advance in order to accommodate staff availability. We also have four evening events over the course of the school year that require attendance.
